Learn how to clean and store your NEUMEE yoga mat properly. Simple steps to maintain grip, prevent odors, and extend the life of your mat.
Quick Answer
Clean your NEUMEE yoga mat after every few uses with a gentle spray and air-dry it flat, then roll it loosely with the suede side out to protect the surface and prevent odors.
Why Proper Care Matters for Your NEUMEE Mat
Your NEUMEE yoga mat is made from natural rubber with a microfiber suede top layer. That combination gives you excellent grip when dry and becomes even tackier when slightly damp, but it also means the mat absorbs sweat and oils more than a standard PVC mat. Without regular cleaning, bacteria and odors build up in the suede fibers, and the rubber base can break down if exposed to direct sunlight or harsh chemicals.
The good news is that caring for this mat takes only a few minutes after each practice. The key is knowing what not to do: avoid machine washing, soaking, or using any cleaner with alcohol, bleach, or ammonia. These will strip the natural rubber and damage the suede bonding.
Step-by-Step NEUMEE Mat Care Routine
- Step 1: Prepare a gentle cleaning spray: Mix 1 cup of distilled water with 2-3 drops of mild dish soap or a dedicated natural yoga mat cleaner in a spray bottle. Shake gently. Avoid vinegar or essential oils in high concentration — vinegar can break down natural rubber over time. Never use alcohol, bleach, or ammonia-based cleaners. They will ruin the suede top layer.
- Step 2: Wipe the mat after practice: Lay the mat flat on a clean surface. Lightly mist the cleaning spray onto a soft microfiber cloth — do not spray directly onto the mat to avoid oversaturating the suede. Wipe the entire top surface in long, even strokes. Flip the mat and wipe the rubber bottom with a separate damp cloth. Common mistake: spraying too much liquid. The suede layer should feel damp, not wet. Excess moisture can cause delamination.
- Step 3: Air-dry the mat completely: Hang the mat over a drying rack or a clean shower rod, or lay it flat on a towel. Keep it out of direct sunlight — UV rays degrade natural rubber. Drying usually takes 30–60 minutes in a well-ventilated room. Do not roll it up until both sides feel completely dry to the touch. Never roll up a damp mat. Trapped moisture leads to mildew and a sour smell that is hard to remove.
- Step 4: Store the mat correctly: Once dry, roll the mat loosely with the suede (top) side facing outward. This prevents the rubber from pressing into the suede fibers and keeps the surface texture intact. Use the included carrying strap to secure it, but do not cinch it too tight — leave some slack so the mat can breathe. Common mistake: rolling the mat too tightly or with the rubber side out. Tight rolls create permanent creases in the rubber base.
- Step 5: Deep clean every 4–6 weeks: For a deeper refresh, fill a bathtub with cool water and add a few drops of mild soap. Submerge the mat and gently agitate it with your hands for 2–3 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cool water until no soap remains. Squeeze out excess water gently — do not wring or twist. Lay flat to dry as described in Step 3. Skip the deep clean if your mat still feels tacky after a surface wipe. Over-washing can strip the natural grip of the suede.
